W Michigan CC spins to Khurram
by Akhil Ahuja

A gloomy, cold and windy day could not dampen the spirit of team Chicago United against West Michigan CC. Customary early arrival of CU players at Grand Rapids, MI signaled excitement and enthusiasm. Winning the toss, WMI CC elected to bat. This appeared to be a good decision as showers were expected half way through the match. The openers gave WMI a good 1st wicket partnership. Mayank G contributed his much needed 50+ runs to the team’s cause while wickets fell on the other end. CU dropped several catches but despite below par performance on the field, it managed to limit WMI to 93/6 at the 20 over break. Lesser experienced batsmen were challenged by most CU bowlers who took full advantage of good bowling conditions. CU debutant Khuram (5 wickets) and Abhijit (4 wickets) bowled splendidly making up for all fielding lapses limiting WMI to 126 all out in the 30th over, a total certainly below par for the division but challenging nonetheless given the conditions.

Just before the start of CU batting, light showers made the chase trickier. CU lost two quick wickets and found itself 9 for 2 under 4 overs. Debutant Paul and Gautham constructed a responsible 3rd partnership of 40 runs. Umair and Abhijit contributed with a valuable 60 runs partnership as well and with a little bit of nerves Chicago United completed the chase with captain Sami finishing the formalities. This led to CU’s 1st win of the MwCC season and put them on the points table. Some questions remain regarding CU batting in difficult conditions.
